Frequently Asked Questions
How does Unfried track my screen time?
On Android, Unfried uses the UsageStatsManager API to read per-app usage data. On iOS, it uses the Screen Time API (DeviceActivityFramework). Both require your explicit permission, and all data stays on your device.
Why does Unfried need usage access permission?
Unfried needs to read your app usage statistics so it can calculate your fry's time bar. Without this permission, the app can't detect how much time you spend on tracked apps. You can grant this in your device's Settings.
My fry died. What happens now?
When your fry's time bar hits zero, it dies instantly and gets memorialized in the Fryward (fry graveyard). You can start a new fry right away, or — if you haven't used it for this fry yet — use the one-per-fry second chance to revive it. Your dead fries are remembered forever in the Fryward on the Achievements tab.
Can I change my daily screen time limit?
You can pick a harder difficulty tier (Hardcore 30m, Challenger 45m, Balanced 60m, Chill 90m) at any time from Settings — your fry's time bar depletes 1:1 against the tier you choose, so a higher limit means a more relaxed pace. To protect against accidental deaths, you can only reduce the limit, not raise it, and only if the change leaves at least 15 minutes of buffer on today's bar.
Does Unfried collect any of my data?
Your screen time data stays on your device — per-app usage, tracked apps, settings, streaks, fry history, coins, and hats are all stored locally in SQLite and are never uploaded. Unfried does use a few third-party services for specific functions (RevenueCat for subscriptions, Firebase Firestore for version checks and optional feedback, PostHog and Firebase Analytics for product and advertising analytics). No accounts, no in-app ads, no selling your data. See our Privacy Policy for the full breakdown.
How do I add or remove apps from tracking?
Open the Settings tab and look for the "Tracked Apps" section. You can add new apps to monitor or remove ones you no longer want to track.
Can I restore my data if I reinstall the app?
Since all data is stored locally on your device, uninstalling the app permanently deletes your data, including your fry, streaks, achievements, and Fryward history. We recommend keeping the app installed.
Notifications aren't working. What should I do?
Make sure notifications are enabled both in your device's system settings for Unfried and inside the app under Settings. On Android, also check that battery optimization isn't preventing background activity. On iOS, ensure notifications aren't set to "Deliver Quietly."
Troubleshooting
Screen time data isn't updating:
- Verify that usage access permission is granted in your device settings
- On Android: Settings → Apps → Special access → Usage access → enable Unfried
- On iOS: Settings → Screen Time → ensure Screen Time is enabled and Unfried has permission
- Try restarting the app or your device
The app is crashing or freezing:
- Make sure you're running the latest version of Unfried from the App Store or Google Play
- Try force-closing and reopening the app
- If the issue persists, reinstall the app (note: this will erase your local data)
Time bar seems inaccurate:
- Your time bar is based on total tracked app usage vs. your daily limit
- Check that the correct apps are in your tracked list (Settings tab)
- Screen time data may take a few minutes to sync from your device's OS
